Since its inception, the Congress of African Journalists (CAJ) has been a steadfast advocate for press freedom, professional growth, and the protection of journalists across the African continent. As we reflect on the years since 2020, CAJ takes pride in the significant milestones achieved, showcasing the organization’s commitment to empowering the media landscape in Africa.
Responding to the COVID-19 Pandemic: Safeguarding Journalists
The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for journalists, from physical health risks to economic instability and restrictions on movement. CAJ rose to the occasion by:
- Advocacy for Media Freedom During Lockdowns: CAJ collaborated with regional bodies to call for the recognition of journalists as essential workers, enabling them to report freely during lockdowns.
- Digital Journalism Training: Recognizing the need for remote work capabilities, CAJ organized virtual workshops on digital storytelling, fact-checking, and multimedia reporting, empowering journalists to adapt to a rapidly changing media environment.
- Promoting Reliable in formation through the Media in Africa: CAJ worked with journalists unions, associations and other stakeholders, including Article 19, to promote reliable information through training journalists, other media workers and engaging civil society groups, governments and other actors.
Strengthening Press Freedom
CAJ has tirelessly fought for the protection and expansion of press freedom, advocating for legislative reforms and defending journalists under threat. CAJ partnered with the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU) and UNESCO to establish the African Media Lawyers Network (AMLN) as a rapid response frameworks for journalists facing threats, providing legal aid and safety in the course of their duty. The AMLN was officially launched during the African Media Convention in Accra, Ghana in May 2024.

As media faces increasing scrutiny for misinformation and bias, CAJ continued to champion ethical journalism through its entire network.
Capacity Building and Media Innovation
Recognizing the need for continuous learning, CAJ has prioritized training and innovation and continues to work with journalists organizations and various partners in this regard.

Forging Strategic Partnerships
Collaboration has been central to CAJ’s achievements. Since 2020, CAJ has partnered with various organizations, including UNESCO, and the African Union (AU) to amplify its advocacy efforts and resources. These alliances have enabled CAJ to scale its impact across the continent. Through its participation at the African Media Convention (Arusha, Tanzania- May 2022), (Lusaka, Zambia – May 2023), (Accra, Ghana-May 2024), at the international conference on the commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, in Addis Ababa in November 2024, CAJ has positioned itself as an important player in the continent and built solid networks for collaborative work.
Looking Ahead
While celebrating these milestones, CAJ recognizes that the journey toward a free and robust media ecosystem in Africa is ongoing. The organization remains committed to addressing challenges such as disinformation, political repression, and the digital divide. CAJ envisions a future where African journalists operate in a safe, equitable, and innovative environment, upholding the values of truth and accountability.
